THE STRIKING CLOCK TOWER
IN THE CENTRE OF THE
ADMINISTRATION BUILDING WILL
BE RESTORED AS PART OF THE
OVERALL DEVELOPMENT.
HISTORY
The former Wards, Administration
Building and Lodge House of
Aberdeen's City Hospital have been
carefully restored to create 31
residential two and three bedroom
properties. The origins of the
Hospital date back to the 1870's.
Designed by William Smith in 1874,
City Hospital is an important listed
building, which stands as a landmark
in the City of Aberdeen. Built to
house patients who were cared for
previously in the disused match
factory, the hospital was the pride of
all in Aberdeen. It was later extended
in 1892 by John Rust, who added
the prominent clock tower, which is
flanked on both sides by granite
urns, and highlighted by the green
fish scale slate roof.
The building is constructed of the
famous local Grey Granite, with
either an ashlar face or by using a
style referred to as Aberdeen Bond.
These elements distinguish Aberdeen
from other major Scottish Cities. The
approach to the new apartments
pass through the listed stone gate
piers and by the Gate Lodge, adding
to the richness of the development.
